When it comes to transforming a kitchen or bathroom, cabinetry is one of the most important investments you can make. It sets the tone for your design, influences functionality, and—when chosen wisely—can last for decades. But not all cabinetry is created equal. One of the most common conversations we have with homeowners is about the difference between builder-grade cabinetry and semi and full, custom-quality cabinetry.
At McDrake Remodeling, we take quality seriously because we’ve seen firsthand what happens when the materials don’t measure up. Far too often, we’re called in after homeowners experience sagging shelves, peeling finishes, warped particle board, or hardware that fails long before it should. Saving money upfront may feel good—but repairing or replacing failing cabinetry just a few years later ends up costing far more.
That’s why our craftsmanship, attention to detail, and vendor partnerships revolve around long-term value, beauty, and durability—not shortcuts.
Builder-grade cabinets are typically designed for speed and affordability. Homebuilders often install them as a baseline option because they check the “new kitchen” box—but not much beyond that. These cabinets often include:
High-end cabinetry is designed for long-term performance and lasting beauty. These cabinets prioritize craftsmanship, customizability, and premium materials, offering:
These features not only elevate your space visually—they ensure that your investment is protected for years to come.
McDrake Remodeling proudly works with proven, high-quality cabinetry brands that align with our standards for excellence and longevity. Our cabinetry partners include:
Each vendor offers its own strengths in customization, quality, materials, and design flexibility—but all reflect the craftsmanship we demand for our clients.
Your home is an investment, and your cabinetry should be too. When you choose McDrake Remodeling, you’re choosing:
We don’t want to see your kitchen or bathroom fall apart in a few years. We want to build a space you’ll love—and rely on—for decades.
If you’re planning a remodel and want cabinetry that will stand the test of time, our team is here to walk you through the best options for your design, lifestyle, and budget.

There’s nothing quite like living in a space that fits your daily needs, your lifestyle, and your personal style—and this recent Norfolk bathroom renovation is a perfect example of how good design and quality craftsmanship can transform a room completely.
What started as a small, dated bathroom has now become a bright, modern, and highly functional space the homeowners love. By reimagining the layout and upgrading every major element, our team turned this bathroom into a spa-inspired retreat designed for comfort, efficiency, and long-term durability.
Like many older bathrooms, this space suffered from a tight layout that wasn’t supporting daily needs. Before any new materials were installed, we focused on reworking the foundation of the room.
The biggest transformation happened in the shower. What was once a small, narrow walk-in space is now a spacious, comfortable shower footprint complete with a custom glass door that opens up the room visually and physically. This change alone significantly improved how the space feels and functions.
Storage, style, and quality were key considerations in the selection of the new vanity, and the homeowners chose a centerpiece that checks all the boxes.
The bathroom now features a 48″ Ariel Cambridge vanity topped with Carrara White quartz countertops—a combination that delivers timeless beauty and reliable performance.
This vanity is perfect for anyone who values craftsmanship, durability, and functionality in their daily routine.
Above the vanity, a Helios mirror with LED lighting adds both sophistication and incredible lighting for daily use.
A floating white oak shelf adds soft warmth and a custom touch, providing extra display or storage without overwhelming the space.
To complete the fixture upgrades, we installed a Kohler Santa Rosa toilet, known for its efficiency and dependable performance.
With improved lighting, expanded space, durable materials, and a modern design palette, this bathroom has been completely transformed. The finished space feels brighter, more open, and more inviting—and most importantly, it now supports the homeowners’ daily routines with comfort and ease.

There’s nothing quite like living by the water — peaceful mornings, golden sunsets, and the relaxing sound of nature all around. But for one of our recent clients along a beautiful Hampton Roads lake, enjoying the outdoors came with a challenge: bugs. They loved to cook and entertain outside but wanted to create a space that allowed them to enjoy the views comfortably year-round — without the pests.
That’s where our Betterliving Sunrooms & Awnings of Hampton Roads team, a division of McDrake Remodeling, came in.
Using the home’s existing deck as the foundation, our team reinforced the structure with concrete footers and additional posts to support the weight and design of the new 3-season sunroom. The finished room measures approximately 10’ x 21’, perfectly sized for entertaining, relaxing, and taking in the lake views.
The homeowner selected a white Betterliving 3-Season Sunroom featuring single-pane glass windows, doors, transoms, and knee walls. The front wall facing the water was designed to be 8’-6” above the floor, matching the door height from the main home and ensuring a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living.
The result? A bright, airy retreat that feels like part of the outdoors — but with the comfort and protection of being inside.
Now, our client enjoys breathtaking fall views of the lake from their new sunroom. Whether they’re sipping coffee in the morning or hosting friends for dinner, the space offers the perfect mix of comfort, function, and design — all without compromising their incredible view.
A Betterliving 3-Season Sunroom is one of the most popular additions among homeowners in Hampton Roads — and for good reason:
Enjoy your deck, backyard, or waterfront views from early spring through late fall.
Say goodbye to mosquitos and other pests while keeping the fresh air and natural light you love.
A professionally built sunroom adds beauty and function to your home — and increases its appeal.
Choose from a variety of sizes, colors, and configurations to perfectly fit your space and style.
As a Licensed Class A General Contractor, we handle every detail — from design to construction — with the craftsmanship and care your home deserves.
Ready to enjoy your backyard or waterfront views in comfort? The Betterliving by McDrake team can help you design the perfect sunroom, screen room, or patio cover for your home.

Carpet Hut by McDrake — Helping Hampton Roads homeowners make their homes beautiful, comfortable, and holiday-ready—one floor at a time.
When Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant decided to expand, they envisioned more than just additional seats. Their second-story addition, Lucy’s Sky Bar, needed to deliver a unique outdoor dining experience — one where guests could enjoy the views, the sunset, and fresh air, without battling glare, wind, or stifling afternoon heat. That’s where we at Betterliving Sunrooms & Awnings of Hampton Roads stepped in
For Lucy’s Sky Bar, our team installed a state-of-the-art pergola + canopy system paired with motorized solar shades. It’s more than just a structural aesthetic upgrade — it’s about comfort, flexibility, and giving Abbey Road a shading solution that works on their schedule, not the weather’s.
With the push of a button, the canopy can extend or retract to block sun glare or wind as needed
The motorized solar shades can be effortlessly lowered to block sun glare and reduce wind, creating a comfortable dining experience at any time of day.
All components are custom-fitted to match Lucy’s Sky Bar’s vision — fabrics, colors, logo options, etc.
From our experience, commercial shade systems like this do more than simply make things more pleasant. Here are the key benefits that Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant — and any business thinking about shade — should know:
Guests stay longer, enjoy their meals and drinks more, return more often when they can relax without being squinted away by sun or chased indoors by wind.
With shade, wind breaks, and weather-adaptable shading systems, restaurants can extend use of outdoor or semi-outdoor areas well beyond “ideal weather.” Cooler evenings, off-peak months — where shade and protection help make an attractive dining environment.
Sunlight fades fabrics, carpets, furniture, décor. By filtering harsh UV rays and minimizing exposure, Lucy’s Sky Bar can keep its finishes looking sharp longer. Less frequent replacement & maintenance needed.
Shade systems now come with hundreds of fabric options; you can custom print logos or business names. It’s not only functional — it’s part of what sets the tone. At Lucy’s Sky Bar, the installation feels like a seamless part of their design.
Betterliving’s commercial shade line is designed to make it effortless for businesses:
In today’s competitive restaurant environment, offering shade isn’t just a luxury — it’s part of the service. It says, “We care about your comfort.” For Lucy’s Sky Bar, the pergola, canopy, and solar shade system is more than a feature — it’s a value-added investment that helps keep customers coming back, enjoying more, and remembering the ambiance.
If you’re considering upgrades to your outdoor space, we’d love to help. Whether it’s cool relief under the sun, protection from unpredictable weather, or simply creating an inviting space people want to return to — shade done right makes all the difference.

At McDrake Remodeling, we believe every home remodel should tell a story—and this one is all about character, creativity, and detail. It began with a wonderful referral: one of our recent kitchen remodel clients was so thrilled with their experience that they introduced us to a friend who was ready to transform his bathroom into a one-of-a-kind retreat.
From the very first design meeting, we knew this project would be extraordinary.
Our client envisioned a bathroom with steampunk style, but also a natural, earthy feel that would create the perfect escape for relaxation. The design called for rich textures, darker tones, and statement-making details that make the space feel like a retreat.
Every detail — from the custom CopperSmith copper soaking tub to the concealed smart systems — was carefully planned to create a bathroom that is as functional as it is imaginative.
From initial sketches to the final installation, our design team worked hand-in-hand with the homeowner to make sure every material and finish reflected his vision. By blending industrial steampunk character with natural, earthy comfort, we created a bathroom that feels both bold and restorative.
The result? A space so unique and immersive that our client jokes he never wants to leave.
The bathroom embraces steampunk style through bold, industrial-inspired details: exposed copper tones, dark finishes, rivet-like accents, and strong geometric lines. The centerpiece of the space, a custom CopperSmith copper soaking tub, is both sculptural and functional, commanding attention while offering an indulgent retreat. Complementing materials such as rich tile patterns, layered textures, and vintage-inspired fixtures reinforce the unique, atmospheric design.
At the heart of the room is an aged hammered copper bathtub paired with a California Faucets Descanso Steampunk Bay Tub Filler.
The entrance alone makes an impression: a Rustica Steampunk sliding barn door opens to reveal a room filled with the elements steampunk is known for—metal, leather, rustic wood, and copper—all layered together with warmth and character.
The showpiece of this remodel is the Thermasol HydroVive steam shower system, offering a spa-like experience at home. With LED rain shower heads, built-in aroma therapy, immersive soundscapes (beach, jungle, stream), and even access to apps like Netflix and Spotify, this shower goes far beyond function.
Designed for seamless integration, the Thermasol HydroVive steam shower system works in tandem with smart touchscreen controls, allowing users to effortlessly adjust light, sound, steam, and water settings at their fingertips. This level of customization gives homeowners total control over their sanctuary’s mood and functionality.
Adding to the luxury, a custom Bedrosians Hemisphere Henna Pebble waterfall feature creates the soothing sound of running water, echoing a natural stream. Enclosed in glass, the steam shower is as breathtaking as it is relaxing.
The dated vanity was replaced with a stunning Shiloh Distressed Oak–stained piece, instantly grounding the bathroom in warmth and character. Topped with Sandalus Leathered Quartzite countertops, this natural stone surface beautifully ties together the copper and leather-inspired tones that define the steampunk aesthetic.
Finishing details elevate the design: Descanso Works steampunk faucets add mechanical charm, while Belcastel pulls provide a subtle industrial touch. Two Hinkley Vaughn Bar Light with bold, industrial flair illuminates the space, reflecting off James Allan Rusted Mirrors for added drama. Completing the ensemble, two Thompson Traders Black Copper sinks introduce texture and depth, making the vanity both a functional centerpiece and a true design statement.
A mix of luxury materials adds depth and dimension throughout the space:
Gorgeous light fixtures and recessed lighting set the ambiance, while a private water closet houses a Kohler Memoirs toilet in Thunder Grey for added functionality.
The Chapman & Myers Lorford Mercury light fixture casts a moody, lunar glow that feels straight out of a vintage observatory. Its celestial shimmer sets the stage for the water room, where the private water closet offers both discretion and a sense of theatrical design—an essential balance of utility and steampunk-inspired intrigue.
To enhance the room’s industrial character, the walls were finished with a custom color-wash technique, blending two shades of gray to mimic the timeworn look of limewash and plaster—adding both texture and a sense of age to the space.
The cabinetry is elevated with Cremone bolt–style hardware in the Belcastel knob design, finished in a cool aged iron. This distinctive hardware adds a touch of wrought-iron character, perfectly complementing the steampunk aesthetic while giving the cabinetry a timeless, handcrafted feel.
One of the most unique features of this remodel is the secret walk-in closet. To keep the space private—and on theme with the homeowner’s vision—our team designed a custom Murphy door disguised as a built-in bookcase. With a clever nod to steampunk ingenuity, a specific book acts as the release mechanism, swinging open the hidden door to reveal the closet beyond. Inside, the space was outfitted with an Efla closet organizing system, combining practical storage with an unexpected, cinematic reveal. This detail not only enhances the steampunk aesthetic but also makes the home feel like something out of a storybook adventure.
Hallmark Floors’ Calgary Red Oak from the Monterey Hardwood Collection was installed in the bedroom and closet, bringing timeless elegance with a modern edge. Inspired by European design, this collection features random-width planks that add dimension and visual interest while highlighting the natural beauty of oak. The warm, refined tones pair seamlessly with the custom tile work that flows from the bathroom into the bedroom, creating a cohesive and sophisticated transition between spaces.
The thoughtful design of this remodel extends beyond the bathroom itself and into the adjacent master suite. A custom beverage center was installed, allowing the homeowner to enjoy coffee or refreshments immediately upon waking or while relaxing after a steam session. This integration enhances the sense of luxury while creating a seamless, connected experience between the bathroom and bedroom.
Our talented construction team brought this steampunk bathroom vision to life with unmatched skill and dedication. From carefully demoing the original dated space to rebuilding it with precision, their expert craftsmanship ensured every detail was executed flawlessly. Beyond technical skill, their problem-solving and creativity transformed challenges into opportunities, allowing custom features like hidden doors, intricate finishes, and unique design details to come together seamlessly. The result is a one-of-a-kind space that showcases not only the design vision but also the artistry and ingenuity of our team.
The homeowner’s vision required significant behind-the-scenes problem solving. The weight of the copper soaking tub and advanced steam shower system demanded structural reinforcement. Working collaboratively with engineers, the construction team modified the floor system from the garage below, ensuring the upper bathroom could safely support the additional load without compromising aesthetics or performance.
The high-tech steam shower system required access points, but our client wanted a clean look. We designed a discreet wall panel inside the closet, making the system accessible without compromising aesthetics.
This project was more than just a bathroom remodel — it was a true collaboration between our design and construction teams to turn a bold, imaginative concept into a fully functional and extraordinary living space. From the intricate tile patterns and custom copper elements to the state-of-the-art HydroVive steam shower, every detail was thoughtfully planned and expertly executed.
The challenges were complex, from engineering structural supports for heavy fixtures to designing clever hidden elements like the Murphy door and concealed steam shower access. Yet, through problem-solving, craftsmanship, and creativity, we proved that no vision is too ambitious.
Projects like this showcase our passion for creating custom kitchens and bathrooms that are not only beautiful but also deeply personal and uniquely tailored to each homeowner. This steampunk-inspired retreat is proof that when imagination meets expertise, the result is nothing short of extraordinary.
This project is a perfect example of what sets McDrake Remodeling apart:
This wasn’t just a remodel—it was a transformation. A steampunk-inspired sanctuary filled with luxury, craftsmanship, and imagination.

At Betterliving Sunrooms & Awnings of Hampton Roads—also known as Betterliving by McDrake—we specialize in creating spaces that bring the outdoors in, offering year-round enjoyment, comfort, and beauty. Our latest project in Suffolk, Virginia is the perfect example of how a simple space can be transformed into a breathtaking, four-season retreat.
The homeowners came to us with a dream: to convert their existing screened-in porch into a space they could enjoy comfortably in any weather, without losing the peaceful connection to nature they cherished. Their backyard opens up to a quiet wooded area, with frequent deer and wild turkey sightings, a variety of birds, and a beautifully landscaped pergola and garden. The goal was to make this natural view the star of the space—while also protecting it from the elements.
Our team got to work transforming the screened-in porch into a gorgeous four-season sunroom, complete with:
The result is nothing short of stunning. These homeowners now have a temperature-controlled escape that allows them to watch wildlife, sip coffee in the morning, read a book on a rainy day, or entertain guests—all while enjoying panoramic views of their wooded backyard and garden.
Whether it’s spring blossoms, summer sun, fall foliage, or a winter snow dusting, this sunroom offers a front-row seat to nature’s show—in total comfort.

At McDrake Remodeling, we believe even the smallest spaces can deliver the biggest transformations. For this Virginia Beach family, our team recently brought new life to their primary and hall bathrooms—spaces that were once dark, dated, and challenging to maintain. Now, both rooms reflect a fresh, modern style and functionality that the homeowners will enjoy for years to comee.
The homeowners came to us wanting more light, less maintenance, and a cleaner, contemporary look. Their existing bathrooms featured outdated tile with heavy grout lines—difficult to keep clean and visually cluttered. Though the bathrooms weren’t large, they dreamed of open, brighter spaces with sleek finishes and smart layouts. And that’s exactly what we delivered.
We started with a full demo of the old primary bath, carefully opening up the shower area by removing a soffit and widening the entry. This change alone brought a sense of spaciousness and welcomed in more light. A new half wall beside the toilet provided privacy without making the room feel boxed in.
To elevate the space further, we installed stunning 24” x 24” Superwhite Satin Calacatta tile on the shower walls—its clean lines and marble-like finish add timeless sophistication. The homeowners selected Responsive Industries luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, known for its durability and easy maintenance.
✔️ New vanity and framed mirror
✔️ Modern lighting and recessed shower lighting
✔️ New exhaust fan
✔️ Fresh plumbing fixtures
✔️ A crisp, bright coat of paint to tie it all together
✔️ A custom DreamLine frameless shower door was installed to further enhance the feeling of openness while maintaining separation and functionality.
The result is a serene, spa-like space that feels open, bright, and beautifully modern.
In the hall bath, we carried through the same thoughtful attention to light and layout. Our team removed the soffit above the tub to visually expand the space, and we built a wall between the tub and toilet for added privacy.
Additional upgrades included:
✔️ Responsive Industries LVT flooring (installed by our Carpet Hut by McDrake team)
✔️ New toilet, vanity, and mirror
✔️ Updated lighting and fan
✔️ New plumbing fixtures
✔️ A bright, clean paint finish to complete the look
This hall bath now feels polished, welcoming, and easier than ever to maintain.

When investing in a sunroom or awning for your home, you want something that’s built to last, customized to your lifestyle, energy-efficient, and backed by a company that puts you first. That’s why more Hampton Roads homeowners are choosing Betterliving Sunrooms & Awnings of Hampton Roads — and why McDrake Remodeling is proud to be your authorized Betterliving dealer in the region.
Whether you’re comparing brands like Modern Exteriors by Design or Ecco Sunrooms, Betterliving rises to the top — and we’re here to show you why.
Betterliving uses only the highest-quality components to build sunrooms and awnings that hold up against time and the elements. Their heavy-duty aluminum and vinyl framing systems are corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance, and engineered to withstand rain, snow, wind, and intense UV rays.
Betterliving stands out with a broad range of design customization options. Whether it’s the ability to choose from a variety of frame colors, Gable Roof vs Studio Roof, or to select from a wide range of fabric patterns for awnings, Betterliving offers flexibility to match personal styles or home aesthetics. This level of customization may exceed what competitors provide in terms of both aesthetics and practical functionality.
Other companies may offer customization, but few match Betterliving’s design flexibility and structural integrity. With Betterliving, you never have to sacrifice function for form.
For awnings, Betterliving goes even further with Gore-Tenara® thread, a Teflon®-coated, fade-proof, waterproof, mildew-resistant thread that outlasts traditional stitching materials. That means fewer repairs, longer lifespan, and better appearance over time.
Gore-Tenara threads are made from 100% Teflon®-coated fibers, making them highly resistant to UV degradation. This means the threads won’t weaken or fade over time, even after years of sun exposure. For homeowners, this translates to long-lasting, vibrant awnings that continue to look great year after year.
Compare this to competitors — many of which use conventional stitching and basic frame materials — and the Betterliving difference becomes crystal clear.
Betterliving sunrooms are crafted with energy-efficient glass and insulation options that help maintain a comfortable temperature year-round. Whether it’s a 3-season or 4-season room, your space stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter — reducing the strain on your HVAC system and saving on energy bills.
Competitors also advertise energy-saving features, but Betterliving’s consistent focus on top-tier glazing and insulation makes it a smart, dependable investment for long-term comfort and savings.
Betterliving products are subjected to rigorous testing for wind resistance, snow load, and UV exposure. These quality control processes ensure your sunroom or awning performs as expected — even in the unpredictable Hampton Roads weather.
Other brands may promote similar durability, but Betterliving’s reputation is built on verified performance and longevity.
When you see the GOLD LABEL on Betterliving sunrooms, doors, and windows, you’re looking at a mark of superior quality and performance. This certification comes from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), the most trusted name in third-party window and door testing since 1962.
The Gold Label means that Betterliving products have passed rigorous standards set by the Fenestration Manufacturers Association, ensuring that every window and door meets or exceeds voluntary specifications for aluminum, vinyl (PVC), and wood materials. These standards are widely recognized—and often required—by federal, state, and local building codes.
You shouldn’t have to worry about fading fabrics or faulty components. Another factor that sets Betterliving apart is its robust warranty. For instance, Betterliving typically offers long-term warranties (sometimes lifetime), which speaks to the confidence they have in their product’s durability and performance.
Betterliving also offers an industry-best 12-year fabric warranty, providing one of the most comprehensive guarantees available in the outdoor living space.
Betterliving’s products are designed with user-friendly installation in mind. Many of their sunrooms and awnings come with systems that simplify the setup process for both contractors and homeowners. In comparison, competitors might require more complex, time-consuming installation methods, which could add to overall costs and inconvenience.
At McDrake Remodeling, we’ve built a reputation on transparency, expert craftsmanship, and treating our clients like family. As a locally owned and operated Class A General Contractor, we understand Hampton Roads homes and weather conditions better than anyone. Our team brings decades of remodeling experience — and nearly a 5-star average rating — to every project.
As the authorized Betterliving dealer in Hampton Roads, we don’t just sell these products — we stand behind them. From your initial consultation to final walkthrough, you can count on clear communication, detailed workmanship, and a sunroom or awning you’ll enjoy for years.

After completing a breathtaking first-floor renovation, our clients in Suffolk, VA invited McDrake Remodeling back—this time to reimagine and renovate their entire second story. From a master bedroom and bathroom overhaul to a rec room glow-up and full stairway redesign, this project showcases the transformative power of thoughtful design, quality materials, and expert craftsmanship.
We’re proud to have earned our clients’ continued trust, and we’re excited to share the next chapter of this home’s journey.
This renovation started with a dated upstairs guest bathroom that was completely reconfigured to improve both form and function. We relocated the toilet, removed the single vanity, and installed a sleek double vanity sink. A spacious new 60” x 34” walk-in shower was added, featuring custom tile work throughout, including a built-in niche for convenience.
A standout design element? The herringbone Grigio mosaic tile on the shower floor and niche—paired with a stunning custom glass shower door that adds a touch of modern elegance. The tile flooring throughout the bathroom completes the sophisticated look.
The master bedroom underwent a major rework. One of the biggest transformations was the removal of a large Grecian column awkwardly placed in the center of the room. We replaced it with a brand-new support wall, opening up the layout while improving functionality and structural integrity.
New doors and updated hardware were installed, and we reconfigured several to swing in a more functional direction. The space was brightened with a fresh coat of matte white paint to match the first floor, creating continuity throughout the home.
Upstairs, the lounge area received a makeover that redefines cozy sophistication. A dated, carpet-clad Jacuzzi tub (yes, really!) was removed to make room for a custom kitchenette and coffee bar—complete with navy blue cabinetry, quartz countertops, a sink, and tile flooring. The updated space offers the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee while taking in the view. We also refreshed the fireplace surround with new paint and custom trim, completing the space with a touch of charm and polish.
Our Carpet Hut by McDrake installation team took on a big task—laying down approximately 920 square feet of At Home / Extraordinaire / Smoked Quartz carpet across the upper bedrooms, closets, hallways, and the stairs leading to the second floor.
To tie the look together with the first floor, we stained the stairs to match the white oak LVP on the first floor, creating a seamless transition between levels.
The original banister was removed and replaced with a modern aluminum railing system, mirroring the updated style and clean lines of the downstairs renovation.
Lighting updates played a big role in the overall aesthetic. Outdated fixtures were swapped for sleek chrome sconces, chandeliers, and other modern lights that enhance the overall brightness and elegance of the upstairs.
We’re incredibly grateful to these wonderful clients for choosing McDrake Remodeling again. The trust they placed in our team to bring their vision to life—on both floors of their home—means the world to us. We don’t take that trust lightly.
McDrake Remodeling is the best! From the design and planning stage to completion - the staff were knowledgeable and professional at all times. The work was excellent, and I am more than please with the results; I am ecstatic! They remodeled my whole first floor including removing walls, adding bathrooms and a whole new kitchen. It was a huge job and they made me very comfortable throughout the entire process.
